Photography: What’s the Difference?
Celebrity photography and editorial photography overlap but serve different purposes, involve different workflows, and require different skills. If you’re an artist, publicist, or brand trying to decide what kind of shoot you need, understanding the distinction will help you hire the right photographer and get images that actually work for your goals.
Defining the Two
Celebrity photography is commissioned to capture public figures — musicians, actors, athletes, influencers — for promotional materials, album artwork, press kits, social media content, or advertising campaigns. The subject’s public image and brand identity drive every creative decision.
Editorial photography is commissioned by publications — magazines, newspapers, digital media outlets — to illustrate a story, profile, or feature. The publication’s visual identity and the story’s narrative drive the creative direction.
The same photographer can do both. The same celebrity can appear in both. But the intent, process, and final use of the images are different.
Key Differences
Who’s the client?
In celebrity photography, the client is typically the artist, their management, their record label, or a brand using the celebrity for endorsement. The photographer answers to the celebrity’s team and needs to deliver images aligned with the artist’s evolving visual identity.
In editorial photography, the client is the publication. The photographer works with the magazine’s photo editor and art director. The celebrity is the subject but not the client — the publication maintains creative control.
What drives the creative direction?
Celebrity shoots are driven by the subject’s brand. If a musician is launching an album with a specific visual aesthetic, every image needs to reinforce that world. Colors, styling, lighting, and mood all serve the artist’s narrative. At ASA Films, we use predictive analytics to inform these decisions before the camera rolls.
Editorial shoots are driven by the story. A profile of the same musician in a magazine might take a completely different visual approach — one that fits the publication’s aesthetic and the writer’s angle.
How are the images used?
Celebrity photography deliverables include:
- Album covers and single artwork
- Press kit images for media distribution
- Social media content (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube thumbnails)
- Tour promotional materials (posters, digital ads, merchandise)
- Brand partnership content
- Billboard and streaming platform banners
Editorial photography deliverables include:
- Magazine covers and interior spreads
- Online article headers and galleries
- Newspaper feature illustrations
- The publication retains usage rights for their platforms

What Makes a Good Celebrity Photographer
Photographing public figures consistently requires specific skills beyond technical photography ability:
Speed and adaptability. Celebrity schedules are tight. You might have 20 minutes instead of the planned two hours. A celebrity photographer needs to produce strong images quickly, with minimal setup time and maximum preparation done in advance.
Understanding of public image. Every image of a celebrity contributes to or detracts from their public persona. The photographer needs to understand what the artist’s team is trying to communicate.
Discretion and professionalism. Celebrity shoots are often confidential. Unreleased album artwork, unannounced brand partnerships, and private moments on set require absolute discretion.
Comfort directing high-profile subjects. Some photographers freeze when working with famous people. Effective celebrity photographers maintain their creative authority on set while being respectful of the subject’s comfort and preferences.
Lighting for people. Celebrity and portrait lighting is a specialized skill. The photographer needs to understand how different lighting setups affect different face shapes, skin tones, and expressions — and adjust in real time. This is one of the key capabilities we look for at ASA Films, where our lead photographer has shot 40+ artists across major labels.
What Makes a Good Editorial Photographer
Strong personal vision. Publications hire editorial photographers specifically for their visual style. Unlike advertising work where the brief dictates the look, editorial work rewards photographers who bring a distinctive, recognizable approach.
Storytelling ability. An editorial shoot needs to capture a narrative across multiple frames. The photographer is creating a visual story, not just a collection of good individual images.
Collaboration with art directors. Editorial photographers work within a layout. They need to deliver images that work at different crops and scales, with space for text overlay, and across both cover and interior spread formats.
When You Need a Celebrity Photographer
Hire a celebrity photographer when:
- You need images that represent the artist’s brand, not a publication’s brand
- The images will be used for promotional purposes (press kit, social media, album art)
- The artist’s team needs final approval over all images
- You need a photographer who can work fast and deliver under pressure
- The shoot involves multiple deliverable formats (vertical, horizontal, square)
When You Need an Editorial Photographer
Hire an editorial photographer when:
- A publication is commissioning the shoot
- The images need to fit a specific editorial narrative or visual theme
- You want a photographer with a strong, recognizable artistic style
- The publication retains creative and usage control
In Miami: Where Both Worlds Meet
Miami’s position as a hub for Latin music, entertainment, and media means the city has a high concentration of both celebrity and editorial photography work. Artists based in or passing through Miami regularly need updated press materials, campaign images, and content for their teams.
The most active celebrity photographers in Miami tend to work across both worlds — shooting commissioned celebrity work for labels and management while also taking editorial assignments from publications covering the same artists. For an inside look at what that workflow looks like, see our breakdown of what an advertising photographer actually does.
ASA Films produces celebrity portrait and promotional photography for artists across the Latin music industry. Our lead photographer, Diego S. Cadavid, has worked with Juanes, Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro, Tini, Pedro Capó, and Wisin. View celebrity portfolio or contact us.
